Breathless – Amy McCulloch

A young woman’s once-in-lifetime adventure in the world of extreme-altitude mountaineering takes a chilling turn when a series of deaths can no longer be written off as accidents.

When journalist and novice climber Cecily Wong is asked to summit Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world, it’s a career-making opportunity. She’s been personally invited by Charles McVeigh, one of the most acclaimed mountaineers in the world, who wants her to report on the final leg of his record-breaking series of summits. But there’s one caveat: he won’t give her the interview until she’s scaled the mountain as part of his climbing party.

Cecily is by far the least experienced of the group, but she is intent on proving herself and will stop at nothing to reach the summit. But when strange things start to happen around her, she becomes concerned. And then people start to die.

Stranded on the mountain with a team she barely knows, she must battle more than the elements in an epic fight for survival—against one of the world’s most dangerous mountains and against an unknown assailant who is picking climbers off one by one.

05/02/2023: 08:55-09:26 water 14.2°C air 8 feels like 3, wave 0.4m energy 12kJ, wind 5km/h, cloudy but calm water. Nearly run over by a fishing boat!

11/02/2023: 09:25-09:58 water 13.9°C air 8 feels like 1 wave 0.1m energy 0kJ wind 0km/h it was very sunny, clear and calm water like a giant swimming pool, didn’t have this condition since months! A small tractor is working on the beach; more stones are visible now, but the shower base is still under the sand.

12/02/2023: 08:59-09:32 water 13.9°C air 8 feels like 5 wave 0.2m energy 1kJ wind 5km/h high tide 11:16am high 0.5m, very sunny, clear and calm water like yesterday. The tractor is still working to flatten the beach in front of Negresco. Tourists are here for the carnival now. A few rolling boats on the sea, 1 single, 2 double, and 1 with 5 rollers! A dozen dog walkers on the beach, some walking, some are just chatting with others. 2 men trying 🎣 to catch 🐟 too.

13/02/2023: 13:02-13:33 water 13.9°C air 13 feels like 9 wave 0.5m energy 5kJ wind 5km/h high tide 12:01pm 0.48m, very sunny and warm, more ripples than yesterday. I didn’t feel cold when coming out of water, no shaking for the first time since winter 😉 chatted a little with the guy with the shopping caddie. He told me that he had not been swimming for a while now. Restaurant is quite full thanks to carnival and warm weather 😋

15/02/2023: 12:25-12:55 water 14°C air 12 feels like 9 wave 0.1m energy 0kJ wind SSW 5km/h high tide 3pm 0.44m, very sunny and warm, but ripples are not that comfortable on the way back and sun is too strong in the eyes, should wear sunglasses. The couple with caddy finished swimming when I arrived. The man said that the lady saw 3 jellyfish! Luck, I didn’t encounter any. Lycra swimwear helps 😀

17/02/2023: 12:09-12:40 water 14°C air 12 feels like 10 wave 0.2m energy 1kJ wind S 5km/h very sunny must have sunglasses on and warm, little ripples, but still OK. A fishman said that he got some octopuses 🐙 2 swimmers and 2 tourists without swinwear went in with shorts 😂

22/02/2023: 12:24-13:00 Cloudy since 5 days, when a ray of sun came out at lunchtime, I went straight to the beach. Water 13.9 °C down trend again, calm and clear. Air 13 feels like 12, wave 0m energy 0kJ wind SSE 5km/h. One moment close to CUM I felt a tingling on my lycra legging, must be a jellyfish 😓

Pyrotechnie vocale, puissance des émotions, machiavélisme politique et trahisons familiales, tous les ingrédients étaient réunis pour faire de Lucia di Lammermoor un succès fulgurant. Donizetti atteint ici au sommet de son art.

En grande difficulté politique et financière, Enrico ne voit qu’une issue pour sauver sa famille de la ruine annoncée : faire accepter au riche et puissant Lord Arturo qu’il prenne sa soeur Lucia pour épouse. Mais Lucia est déjà secrètement éprise d’un autre homme, à qui elle a juré fidélité. Déchirée entre ses devoirs familiaux et son serment amoureux, elle sombrera dans la folie – une folie meurtrière ! S’il n’est déjà plus un inconnu en 1835, c’est bel et bien avec Lucia di Lammermoor que Donizetti s’impose définitivement comme l’un des plus grands génies de sa génération. Walter Scott lui offre avec son roman historique (1819) un cadre idéal pour mettre en valeur les émotions et les affects ici à l’oeuvre. Hyper romantique dans ses sentiments, belcantiste en diable, Lucia di Lammermoor est un absolu chef-d’oeuvre ici présenté avec une distribution d’exception, dans la vision si juste et humaine de Stefano Vizioli.
